Prostate Cancer Awareness Event

When: Thursday, September 11, 2025, from 5:30 – 7:30 PM

Where: Rafiki Coalition (Main Floor) – 601 Cesar Chavez Street, San Francisco, CA 94124

Prostate cancer disproportionately impacts Black men, often appearing earlier, progressing more aggressively, and leading to higher mortality rates. Many also face barriers to timely treatment and care. This event will provide education on prostate cancer, treatment options, proactive steps to protect your health, and personal experiences shared by a prostate cancer survivor. This educational event is led by Dr. Samuel L. Washington III, MD, MAS and Dr. Nynikka Palmer, DrPH, MPH.

Dr. Washington is a urologic oncologist and Assistant Professor at UCSF in the Departments of Urology and Epidemiology & Biostatistics. His research focuses on reducing barriers to cancer care and improving outcomes for communities most affected by prostate cancer. He serves as the Community Outreach and Engagement Liaison for UCSF’s Prostate Cancer Program and as Associate Chair for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in the Department of Urology. Dr. Washington is also a member of several national committees dedicated to advancing health equity and improving cancer care.

Dr. Palmer is an Associate Professor at UCSF in the Department of Medicine at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital, with secondary appointments in Urology and Radiation Oncology. Her research develops culturally responsive solutions to improve prostate cancer care for Black men, including peer navigation and provider communication tools. She leads the Prostate Cancer Task Force of the San Francisco Cancer Initiative and holds leadership roles advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion at UCSF. Community engagement is central to her work, ensuring research and care reflect the voices and needs of the community
